A lubricating material containing a disproportionated product is prepared by (a) disproportionating mono-n-alkyl benzenes, the alkyl groups of which contain 6 to 18 C atoms, under 0À1 to 10% wt. AlCl 3 catalyst at 20‹ to 130‹ C., and (b) fractionating to give a boiling range fraction 165‹ to 300‹ C. at 5 mm. Hg, having an average molecular weight between 350 and 460. The mono-n-alkyl benzenes have alkyl groups containing 10 to 15 carbon atoms, and have average molecular weights between 231 and 264. The disproportionated product may be blended with not more than 50% of di-alkylsubstituted alkylene dicarboxylates such as diisooctyl azelate and di-2-ethyl benzyl azelate. Complex and polyesters may also be present.
