Gaseous oxidising agent and a reducing agent consisting of an aq. soln. contg. Na2S or NaHS are contacted simultaneously with a "contacogen" which is relatively inert chemically towards the oxidising and reducing agents, so that simultaneous reduction and oxidn. occur, with formation of NaOH and Na polysulphide. Prod. is used in treatment of lignocellulose material. Formation of Na2S2O3 by-prod. is minimal with this new redox system. Contacogen is an electroconducting solid acting as site for interfacial contact of reducing and oxidising agents and in contact with them at the same time, to yield the desired reaction.
