A topping tool is mounted on a supporting frame movable up and down, and is preceded by a feeler drum running over the tops so as to adjust the working height, while a spring is fitted between the supporting and main frames. The drum (6) has a pre-setting device acting on the supporting frame (3) to regulate the working height, and which incorporates a servo unit assisting the frame movement. A separate feeler (9) can be mounted in front of the drum to regulate operation of the servo unit, which can be mechanically, electrically, hydraulically or pneumatically operated.
