The composition consists of (1) 20 to 100% by weight of a homogeneous granular surfactant material in the form of homogeneous particles, (2) 0 to 60% by weight of an alkaline sodium and/or potassium pyrophosphate and (3) 0 to 80% by weight of diluent. The surfactant material contains (a) 1 to 30% by weight of a silicate of the formula SiO2:M2O, (b) 0 to 60% by weight of a pyrophosphate of the formula MaHb(P2O7) and (c) 1 to 50% by weight of at least one anionic, non-ionic, zwitterionic and/or ampholytic surfactant. M, a and b in the formulae have the meanings stated in Claim 1. The SiO2:M2O molar ratio in the silicate (a) is 1.6:1 to 4:1. When 1.2 g of the detergent and cleaning composition are added to 1 litre of distilled water at 25 DEG C, stirred for 1 minute and filtered under a nitrogen pressure of 6.8 atm through a filter with a diameter of 142 mm and a pore size of 5 mu m, the molar ratio of filtrate SiO2 to total SiO2 from the silicate is not more than 3.3:4. The detergent and cleaning composition contains a total of 5 to 60% by weight pyrophosphate. The total amount of alkali metal tripolyphosphate (if present) is usually less than 20% by weight of the total pyrophosphate. The detergent and cleaning composition can additionally contain 1 to 40%, based on the dry weight, of a synthetic, water-insoluble, hydrated alumosilicate of the formula Naz[(AlO2)z.(SiO2)y]xH2O or of an amorphous alumosilicate of the formula Nam(mAlO2.nSiO2) or 0.1 to 4% by weight of a glassy phosphate of the formula (Me2O)p(P2O5)q. Me, m, n, p, q, x, y and z in the formulae have the meanings stated in Claims 15, 16 and 17. Despite its reduced phosphorus content, the detergent and cleaning composition has a good cleansing action in hard water.
