1413218 Extruder barrel lining WERNER & PFLEIDERER 12 Nov 1973 [18 Nov 1972] 52355/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division B3] A method of lining the bore 2 of an extruder with a wear-resistant liner comprises providing a bushing 3 of material resistant to wear by material conveyed in the extruder and of a crosssection which is less than that of the bore to be lined to provide a gap between the bushing and wall of the bore, and filling the gap with a castable material 4 the melting-point of which is lower than that of the bushing and that of the material of the wall. The bushing may be divided into two parts 3a, 3b, Fig. 1, which are inserted into the roughly bored-out housing 1 of a screw extruder having worms 17, Fig. 5, and retained in position by mounting jigs or gauges. Channels 5 are provided in the housing for the passage of heating or cooling fluid. Alternatively, the channels may be provided in the cast material by the provision of cores during casting, Fig. 2 (not shown), or provided in the bushing (311), Fig. 3 (not shown). The bushing (3SP1/SP) may be formed by casting with the internal bores being subsequently finished. The filler material may comprise white metal, pouring cement, or two-part synthetic resin systems. The liner may be removed and replaced by removing the filler by the application of heat or by pressing the bushing from the housing.
