1371319 3 - Alkyl or aryl - 6 - methylpregna-3,5-dienes G D SEARLE & CO 17 April 1973 [18 April 1972] 18425/73 Heading C2U Novel steroids of the formula wherein R is C 1 -C 7 alkyl, phenyl, thienyl, tolyl, (C 1 -C 7 alkoxy)-phenyl, chlorophenyl, bromophenyl or fluorophenyl are prepared by heating a benzene solution of 5-hydroxy-16, 17 - isopropylidenedioxy - 6# - methylpregnane- 3,20-dione with aluminium oxide to give 16, 17 - isopropylidenedioxy - 6# - methylpregn - 4- ene-3,20-dione, contacting this with an organometallic compound RM (M is lithium or Mghalogen) and decomposing the adduct formed by treatment with acid in an inert solvent. The novel steroids are anti-inflammatory agents and pharmaceutical solutions and suspensions of them are disclosed.
