1412090 Arc prevention in switches; fixed resistors COQ BV 13 June 1973 [14 June 1972] 28205/73 Headings H1N and HIS [Also in Division H2] A high-voltage switch includes a bridging resistance formed as a helical arrangement of series-connected curved reistance rods made from sintered resistance material mounted on a tubular insulator surrounding a break-duty switching chamber and connected across the fixed and movable contacts for controlling the potential during such switching. The fixed and movable contacts 3, 4 (shown closed in Fig. 1) are mounted in stationary contact holders 1, 2, the movable contact being attached to a piston 6 arranged for movement with in a cylinder 5 and having an annular ring 11 abutting a packing ring 12 to act as a slide valve between a switching chamber 9 and the outer space 10 there being folded contact strips 7, 8 to provide current transition means between the piston and the cylinder. The bridging resistance 13 connected across the contacts at points 14, 15 comprises a series arrangement of curved rods 16 following the crest contour of helical ribs 17 formed on the outer surfaces of two-mouldedresin hollow half-cylinders 18a, 18b which surround the chamber 9 and which are held together by metal supporting rings 22, 23. Supporting member 19, Fig. 2, which are screwed to the half-cycles are engaged by the resistance rods for attachment purposes and spring contacts 20 21 held within the supporting members electrically interconnect the ends of the rods. The complete resistance unit can be assembled after assembly of the switching elements.
