The equipment is especially suited to monitoring large gear wheels typically of above the metre diameter, which cannot be checked conveniently on existing equipment. The equipment is able to check on profiles of every kind, including the usual involute curve profile. The gear wheel is mounted on a turntable, typically the one on which it was cut. Near the table, and in the same plane as the gear wheel, a two axis device is mounted, driven by a small electric motor. This can move linearly under the influence of the motor, and in an angular fashion in one direction under the influence of a spring. A probe is attached to this and is placed in contact with the gear tooth to be checked. An electronic programming unit then drives the measurement device - and its probe - along the drive axis.
