The spindle is particularly for a grinding machine, having a head with clamps at the sides to grip the tool. The head (22) is enclosed by a cap (28) fixed to the spindle housing. The cap can have ports, which can be closed to allow access to the clamping screws (26). Closure of the ports can be effected by a ring (32), rotatable on the cap, with further ports (34) brought in and out of line with those (30) in the cap. There can be an O-ring (36) between ring and cap, so that the ring can be turned by hand, but will remain in the position to which it has been turned. The design allows the noise level emitted by the spindle to be greatly reduced.
