A bioluminescence measuring device comprises a light-sensitive signal emitter and a specimen holder mounted in front of the light inlet opening leading to the emitter; this light inlet is mounted in a wall of a housing and can be obturated by sliding the specimen holder in this housing. An access opening in the housing gives access to the specimen holder only when it is in the correct posn. to block the light inlet. A whole series of bioluminescence measurements can be carried out with the appts. operating continuously and without any need to switch off or modify the electrical component; theis results in accuracy of reproduction. During the non-operating intervals, the light inlet is completely blocked by the right-hand posn. of the block. Used in partic. for determining very small quantities of ATP (adenosin triphosphate).
