Title cpd. imparting fruity notes (esp. grapefruit scent) or, in higher concn., roast chicken aroma to foodstuffs, drink, cosmetics, etc., pref. in combination with other scent- or task-improving agents is produced by subjecting to hydrolysis or hydro genolys 3,7-dimethyl-1,6-octadiene substd. in the 3-position with gp. SR in which R denotes a radical that can be split off, pref. an alkanoyl or aroyl, esp. benzoyl substd. wiht up to 5 halogen atoms, esp. Cl or Br, and/or NO2 gps.
