The safety appliance comprises a rail (J), which is fixed to the ladder and runs along the length of the ladder, or other climbing system and there is a retaining device (6) which runs in this so that it can swivel from a freely sliding setting into a locking setting; and there are means (10) for connecting the retaining device to the climber. The rail is preferably U-sectioned, and the retaining device is in the shape of a roller unit (7), and it is fitted with a locking rib (1), which is accommodated in peripheral guideways, and a detachable retaining harness for personnel. A projection with teeth (9) locks the retaining device in the rail when the connecting means (10) are rotated downwards.
