1424768 Comminuting resilient materials KOBE STEEL Ltd 29 March 1973 [14 Aug 1972 (2) 23 Aug 1972] 15288/73 Heading B2A Comminuting apparatus particularly for use with resilient material, e.g. vulcanized rubber comprises a rotor having a non-circular crosssection over part at least of its length, arranged in a casing so that the distance between an external surface of the rotor and the inner surface of the casing can be changed. The cross-section may be oval or elliptical and two rotors may be used, Fig. 3 supplied with rubber under the pressure of a feed piston 10. The casing or cover 23 may include a screen 27. The cover 23 is pivoted on a pin 24 to discharge the ground material. A further embodiment employs a helical feed screw coaxial with a rotor having an oval cross section the angle of whose major axis varies along the length. The casing is movable by a cam 214 to vary the crushing gap. A still further embodiment employs a casing which includes movable portions or blocks 318, 319, 320, Fig. 8, shown in section in Fig. 10, which are adjusted in position by toothed gearing e.g. 325 which mesh with ring gears 337 to adjust the crushing gap between the casing and rotor. The ring gears (336..338) are driven by gear wheels 345..347. The radial difference between the exterior of the portion 306 of the rotor 307 and the surfaces 321..323 thus continually changes. The apparatus may be modified to have only one, or to have e.g. more than three groups of blocks. In a further embodiment the casing (413) itself is rotatable by a ring gear (434) and a gear wheel (435), Fig. 13 not shown. The casing includes a coating jacket 439 with inlet 440 and outlet 441. The casing (413) may rotate at a higher speed than the rotor (419) and the speeds may be varied separately, enhancing the comminuting effect.
