Ultrasonic test-unit with single send and receive head - incorporating sonic optics comprising concave and convex lens

The ultrasonics-emitting test-head, for examining welded seams of sheet metal of more than 10mm thickness, is intended to guarantee absolutely reliable identification of faults, while being easier to manipulate and less elaborate than similar units. The sonic cone cross-section of the head is enlarged without altering its divergence by the incorporation of a sonic optic in the form of a concave (11) and convex (12) lens or mirror. These are arranged in the plastic leading section of the head. Alternatively, two metal mirrors may be used, whose reflective surfaces are not in one plane, to generate sonic radiation to reach the test-piece at discrete, fixed angles.
