An electrical machine has two sets of brush holders operable by a handwheel or setting drums to produce an even brush shift for speed adjustment when used as an A.C. commutator motor. The handwheel is coupled to a conical gear which mates with a gear on whose shaft there is another gear for driving a brush holder. The tube shaft is driven by a gear and a shaft supports setting drums and tube shaft. The setting drums are marked with scales; the drum being adjustable along the shaft. Handwheel (9) and gear can be disengaged from the other gears and held in a near position with spring loaded ball in grooves. The individual shafts can be operated from a remote position with aid of servo-motors.
