Each digit is represented by a characteristic series of paired pulses, the two pulses in each pair being separated by a time interval (t1) and the individual pairs are separated by an interval For each digit the values of (t1) and (t2) are different, and the values (t1) and (t2) form a (1 out of X), (1 out of Y) code. The switching network used to produce the pulse codes consits of an astable flip-flop device with two transistors (T1, T2)collector of the others via capacitors (C1, C2). Switchable resistors (R1, R2 etc) are used to choose the values (t1) and (t2).
