1277581 Variable-ratio control CARDING SPECIALISTS (CANADA) Ltd 28 Aug 1969 [3 Sept 1968] 41750/68 Heading F2D [Also in Divisions D1 and G3] The count of slivers in a carding machine is controlled by feeding the sliver between sensing means 5, 6, Fig. 1, whose surfaces are normally a given distance apart in relation to the setting of a control valve 9, causing variation in the distance between the surfaces to be magnified by lever means 7 to provide accurate control of the valve and causing the valve to adjust a fluid motor which varies the speed of control means 17 feeding material to form the sliver, the position of the control means corresponding with a given speed ratio without corresponding to a given position of the sensing means. In the preferred embodiment, the lever means consists of a bell-crank 44, Figs. 2A and 2B, pivotally connected at 62 to a lever 67 having a normally-fixed pivot 72 adjustable by a hand wheel 101 whereby the position of the sensing means may be adjusted without altering the speed ratio. The hand wheel is connected to the pivot by a screwed member 96a, a spring-loaded lever 94 and an eccentric shaft 84 which adjusts a lever 76 carrying the pivot 72. Gearing (not shown) interconnects the pivots 62 and 72 and the pivot 62 is mounted in bearings combined with sprag clutches to ensure that the pivots always rotate in the same sense to avoid breakdown of the lubricating film and false brinelling. An eccentric mounting 52 for the roller 5 of the sensing means in the bell-crank 44 permits a coarser adjustment of the position of the sensing means by a hand control 55. To allow the sliver to be released from the sensing means when a blockage has to be cleared, a handle 106 is rotated through 180 degrees to impart substantial movement to the shaft 84 and hence to the lever mechanism. A recirculating or planetary ball or roller bearing system 112, 113 supports a spring-loaded spool 111 in the control valve which adjusts the piston 135a of a fluid motor connected to a system of rollers which shift a belt axially on coned pulleys 144, 145 and also maintain the belt in tension. The shaft 167 on which the belt 144 is mounted is coupled to the drive for the carding machine and has a gap 172 through which the belt may be replaced after the pulley has been axially displaced. The other pulley is mounted at one end of a shaft which forms the input to the variablespeed gear and also drives a twin piston reciproeating pump 132b supplying the motive fluid for the control system. An axially-adjustable helically-grooved plug 130a receives part of the pump output to act as a variable resistance and make the supply to the control valve independent of temperature and viscosity variat ons.
