Airbag protection for steering wheel - with cover attached to side of unsymmetrical folded airbag to reduce injury

The folded airbag is fitted with a cover (4) which normally covers the centre of the steering wheel assembly to protect the airbag. The cover is held in place by flanges and grooves (3) and is pushed outwards by the pressurised airbag. The airbag is folded unsymmetrically so that when it is unfolded the cover is on the side of the airbag, in a position where it cannot cause injury. The cover is glued, welded or rivetted to the airbag and is thus prevented from being flung into the face of the driver.
