Fabrics, esp. cotton, synthetics, including polyamides, polyesters, polyacrylonitrile, PVC, P.T.F.E. rayon, acetate, or glass fibres or their blends, glass, paper, wood, leather, wool, asbestos, cement, metal, metal oxides, ceramics, plastics, painted surfaces, plaster can be treated with compsn contg. a polymer prepd by co-polymerising 25 (pref. 40) wt.% fluoroalkyl gp contg. monomer (I), 0.2-20 wt.% diacetone acrylamide (II') or -methacrylamide (II") of alkylol derivs. (ii"') of (II') or (II"), and opt. a further monomer contg no fluoroalkyl gps. Pref. (I) are unsatd esters with perfluoroalkyl, fluoro alkyl or chlorofluoroalkyl gps. esp. 3-15C perfluoroalkyl acrylates or -methacrylates. When used on fabrics, compsns have excellent oil- and water-repellent properties, resist washing and dry-cleaning and do not effect softness or handle.
