A method of smelt-incineration of solid waste by combustion at 1300-2000 degrees C to give flue gas and liquid slag is as follows: the waste is fed as a closed horizontal column, esp. tangentially, without pre-heating through the side of the furnace just above the liquid slag bath, a flame is directed tangentially at a different angle and horizontally onto the column, pre-heated air or oxygen-rich gas is blown in horizontally, and the waste falls into the liquid; the furnace tapers conically upwards and the gases flow helically up to the top. The bath is pref. electrically heated. As a small incinerator for industrial use or hospitals or for large plants. Contact between hot solid material and the furnace is minimal, thus preventing heavy scour of furnace brickwork.
