The lathe and boring tool has carriers held on slides on the transverse members arranged between the two columns. The workpiece clamping drum is arranged between these tool carrying transverse members. A large number of cutting tools can be provided in this design and the disposal of swarf is easier than if the tools were held in the columns. The tool carriers move longitudinally and in a transverse direction and they are actuated by feed drives. The machining arrangement is held between the end columns which are connected by the machine bed. Transverse members are connected to the end columns and these members carry slide ways for tool carriers. The drum fitted between these slide ways can be indexed into working positions.
