Winding device having contact driven package - with doffer which accelerates empty bobbin to working speed before changeover

Yarn is fed through a traverse guide and into a (pref.) helical guide groove of a driven roller with which a bobbin is in contact whereby the bobbin is rotated and the yarn is wound into a cross-wound package on the bobbin. When the package is completed an empty bobbin is moved into contact with the driven roller to accelerate it to its operating speed and an auxiliary yarn guide engages the yarn at one end of the field of movement of the traverse guide and forms it into a loop so that the yarn is moved out of the guide groove and is engaged in a retaining formation on the end of the empty bobbin whereby the yarn commences to wind on the empty bobbin. The auxiliary yarn guide pref. also moves the yarn to a cutter which severs the yarn between the two bobbins and pref. the two bobbins are mounted on a turn table such that as the dia. of the package on one bobbin increases the turntable rotation and moves the empty bobbin into contact with the driven roller. The doffing arrangement reduces to a minimum the loss of time and the yarn during changeover from a full to an empty bobbin.
