Locking members, e.g. arms 3a of clamping member 3, Fig. 1, are engaged with an inclined surface of a collar inserted in a socket 1, e.g. conical surface 2a, when a tube 4 is moved so as to remove it from the socket, thereby clamping the tube within the socket. As shown the socket has four concentric stepped bores 1a- 1d, the first containing the collar 2 bearing the inclined surface 2a, the second containing a sealing ring 5, and the last two locating the end of the tube 4. The clamping member 3 comprises a ring and a plurality of flexible, axially extending arms bearing teeth 3c at their ends. On insertion of tube 4 the teeth 3c lightly engage the pipe walls and the clamping member 3 slides axially within the collar 2. On attempted withdrawal of the pipe the ends 3a of the arms engage the surface 2a and are cammed inwardly causing the teeth to bite into and clamp the tube. To release the coupling the end 3 of the clamping member is pushed into the socket and the tube 4 withdrawn. The socket 1 may be of metal or plastics material, and the collar 2 may be screwed or pushed into bore la. In one form the collar 2 (Fig. 2) comprises cylindrical portions 8, 10, the latter being a forced fit in the socket, and a projection 11 may be provided. The collar 2, clamping member 3 and sealing ring 5 are assembled on a mandrel 13 (Fig. 6) and the collar is forced into the socket 7 by tool 19. Knife edges 20 may be provided on the tool to upset material from the socket to hold the collar, the mandrel being subsequently withdrawn prior to insertion of the tube 4, (the ends 15 of the mandrel being flexible to enable it to pass through member 3). A free fitting collar may be used, secured only by upsetting the socket material. The clamping member 3 may be of metal or metal coated plastics, or may alterntaively be of plastics material with metal insert strips (28a), (28b) (Figs. 18, 19) (not shown) embedded in it. In the latter case the ends of the strips (28a), (28b) are bent to form the teeth (29), (30) which engage the pipe 4. The ends (33) of the clamping arms 3 (Fig. 20) (not shown) may be angled to contact the sealing ring 5 such that the ring 5 assists opening of the member 3 when releasing the tube (not shown). An auxiliary ring (42) (Fig. 22) (not shown) may have arms 43 extending between the clamp arms to prevent over-tightening of the joint resulting in damage to the pipe 4. Over-tightening may also be prevented by abutment of a ring (36) (Fig. 21) (not shown) against the internal end of the collar 2 to prevent further axial movement of the clamping member 3 due to displacement of ring 5 when the tube 4 is pressurized. The conical face of ring (36) also assists expansion of member 3 on release. Release of the clamping member 3 may be by axial movement of an external sleeve (48), (54), (Figs. 26, 27), (not shown) to engage that end of the clamping member 3 which extends from the socket.
