A strip of tickets is brought by the passenger in advance at reduced price i.e. cheaper than if bought from the driver in a one man operated bus. Several cancelling machines are installed at strategic points so that passengers can cancel their own tickets, even on crowded buses, by pushing a ticket in a slot provided. Boarding point, route number, time or any other data considered relevant is stamped on the ticket. In the invention each sign or symbol produces a characteristic potential when in the operative position. A stepping switch produces a series of potentials according to a programme. The two potentials are compared and the type-head wheel is rotated until they match.
