The protective materials consist only of permanently flowable powdery materials, e.g. chalk, capable of binding volatile acids, e.g. HCl, without further admixture with neutral powdery material, e.g. sand. Prefd. material is basic, of 100 - 200 mu av. grain-size, and esp. consists of natural chalks, metal oxide or hydroxides, opt. admixed with NH4 cpds. or hexamethylenetetramine.
