The production of labels containing both alpha-numeric information and in the form of a line code is effected by passing a continuous band of metallised paper under a printing head. The printing head contains a number of impulse controlled electro-thermal electrodes. The metallised paper (7) is contained on a reel (5) and is passed over guide rollers (36, 37) to a drive roller (26) that is coupled over an intermediate gear coupling with the main shaft of a motor (10). A relay controlled solenoid provides stepping of the drive roller (26). The printing head electrodes (44) together with guide rollers are mounted on a pivotted arm (3) that permits the head to swing down into contact with the paper. A guillotine (33, 34) is tripped when the strip reaches a forward position, to discharge labels into a container (57).
