A piston seal for piston-operated engines working under high pressures comprises at least 1 non-slotted (non-split) piston ring arranged, with radial tolerance, in an angular groove, the outer diameter of the piston ring being dimensioned in such a way that it seals the gap between piston and cylinder under the action of the operating heat. The piston ring has a groove extending about its periphery adapted to receive an auxiliary piston ring which seals the gap between cylinder and non-slotted piston ring until the latter is heated to operating temp. Use of a non-slotted piston ring which reaches its rated sealing efficiency when operating conditions (incl. operating heat) have been attained.
