Motor car drive axle housings subject to asymmetrical cyclic stresses and maximum tensile loading at the lower axle housing wall near the spring supports are heat treated by selective heating of the zones subject to low stressing to 800 to 1250 degrees C for a period during which the zones subject to max. stressing heat up by conduction to 300 degrees C max. The housings are then air cooled to room temp. within a period of =180 secs. The axle housings may be hardened prior to the above treatment. The heat treatment is cheaper to effect than conventional heat treatment and results in improved service performance of the housings which are also easier to machine.
