The conveyor is for the unloading of material from ship's holds, pits etc, and has an elongated stationary guide frame for a bucket elevator, extending downwards from an upper supporting boom. The elevator runs round wheels on the frame, the upper wheel being of larger diameter than the lower one, and the buckets pick up the material as they travel on the chain round the latter, moving through positive guides at intervals on the frame on both the upwards and downwards runs, and the chain runs over a jockey sprocket adjustable at right angles to its direction of movement. This varies the tension in the chain as desired, to allow the buckets to be hauled over the surface of the material if necessary.
