An installation for pulverising rubber tyres is fully automatic, and tyres to be processed are supplied only by vehicles (i.e. no man-handling) whilst the resulting rubber scrap powder must be carried away in sacks. Loosely and randomly unloaded tyres are automatically arranged in a vibrator and then fed to a store where they are classified. "Sluicing" devices are adapted to accept certain batches in predetermined quantities enabling subsequent stages to deal with them. Storage containers may be fed outside a machine for coarsely comminuting the tyres, dealing with several tyres simultaneously. The resulting chips are temporarily stored, the containers being emptied by opening flaps in the bottom. The coarse chips are then further comminuted into smaller particles and metallic foreign bodies removed. This may be effected magnetically, using an electromagnetised conveyor belt. The small rubber chips are pulverised using frictional discs allowing the degree of fineness of the desired powder to be adjusted. The powder is finally stored and bagged as desired.
