The writing desk (1) is a hollow body moulded from plastics with rounded edges shaped like a box with an indentation (2) providing the leg room on one side. The upper edge of the leg room recess is designed to take a table top which covers the top of the recess and provides the writing surface. The side walls of the unit which form the leg room preferably project forwards in the lower back area to provide a foot rest. The outwardly and upwardly aligned walls of the hollow body are preferably cambered slightly to stabilise the desk and prevent distortion when the desk is loaded with books or the like. Drawer sockets and shelves can be cut out from the sides.
