Hydrothermally hardened sand-line (bricks) are prepd. by adding esp. 2-5 wt. % elemental S to lime and sand mixt. before compression and steam-hardening at 180-220 degrees C under steam press. 8-16 atmos. excess. S addn. can improve compressive strength by 70-100%; steam-hardening time can be reduced, resulting in 25-30% energy saving; and other physical properties, e.g. bulk density, elasticity modulus, heat-conductivity and frost-resistance are unimpaired. Water-absorption is reduced by 2-3%, while colour is unaffected.
