Purifying acetic acid contg. acetic anhydride - by adding super-stoichiometric water quantity and distilling with dissolved alkali(ne earth) acetate

AcOH waste is purified by distn. by (1) adding super-stoichiometric quantities of water, pref. 1-50 (5-20) mol.% in excess of stoichiometric quantity needed to saponify Ac2O, and (2) distilling in presence of dissolved alkali(ne earth) acetate, pref. AcONa. Used to purify waste AcOH contng. 0.5-50 wt.% Ac2O, obtd. from acetylation reactions with Ac2O. 90-98% AcOH can be recovered in technical grade purity.
