The direct conversion of weighted binary signal generated in parallel form into a corresponding linear motion is achieved by the use of weighted digital actuators. A flexible tape or wire (1) is fixed at one end and the free end tied to a tensioning spring (2). Each digit of parallel binary information is supplied to an electro-mechanical solenoid (4) that deflects the tape vertically and produces a lateral displacement of the free end of tape. Rollers (3) restrain the tape the stroke of each actuator is set to produce a linear movement of the tape according to the corresponding bit weighting.
