Heater for medical instruments comprises a heat source (7) which is switched on by inserted and pressing the instrument handle (5) on a support (3, 4), whereupon rapid heating of the instrument (6) follows immediately. The heat source may comprise an electronically ignited open gas flame, e.g. in the manner of a gas lighter (1) of which the switch is actuated by a cap (2) with an instrument handle support of which the upper end is forked or wedge-shaped or corresponding in shape to the shape of the handle. The apparatus may be attached to a heavy base plate (8).
