Warm air is blown through a bed of green malt to be dried, the air becoming cooler by taking up moisture and then being exhausted from the bed space. Inlet air supplied to the bed is first humidified, pref. by mixing with a proportion of exhaust air recycled from the bed; this recycled air can be diverted to the inlet air supply from the exhaust chimney by a valve which operates in response to temp. signals of the exhaust air. Inlet air is used as highest possible dew point and can be passed through a pre-heating heat exchanger on its way to the bed. Used for drying green malted grains, e.G. of barley, wheat or rye, to produce pale dried malt. Recycling exhaust air from the bed offers thermal energy savings of 25-45%; existing kilns are easily converted to the new process.
