In the process, the settling basins are largely covered and have rectangular or circular cross-section, the liquids being passed steadily downwards from the inlet to te outlet for the clarified liq. whilst the liq. is simultaneously cooled in the region near the inlet. The process has the advantages of low energy requirements, freedom from blockage, low maintenance, no erosion of vessel walls, particles with widely differing sizes can be sepd., throughput can be varied, simple controls, low evaporation losses, no moving parts, hot liquids do not short-circuit the system, and the sepd. solids are removed with a minimum of admixed liq.
