In a treatment for water, ozone gas is added in metered proportions which can be consumed by the water chemically and bacteriologically by using the redox potential as the controlled condition of an automatic control system. This redox potential forms by additional energy a voltage for the generation of an ozone quantity which is required at that moment by the redox medium of the water to keep the potential constant. This eliminates complex mechanical systems for keeping the redox potential constant; these are also too slow in response to ensure a stable control. The water treatment plant is readily switched ON and OFF when water is to be produced with a set redox potential.
