Mounting for reciprocating church bells - roller carriage to accommodate horizontal forces by further roller mass

The mass (7) is supported for its reciprocating motion on a support (4) secured to a roller carriage (5) mounted on rails (3) which are in turn supported on rollers (2) mounted on a fixed base (1). Movement of the mass in the one direction of reciprocation is said to cause movement of the rail in the opposite direction by virtue of the reaction forces between the carriage rollers and the rail. In this way the horizontal forces on the carriage are balanced out. Several masses e.g. church bells, may be mounted on the same support and reciprocated at different frequencies.
