is prepd. from mono- or di-ethylene glycol, their homologues and ether derivs. having general formula R1O-(CH2CH2O)n-R2 (I) (where n is integer 1 to 6 and R1 and/or R2 is H or 1-5 C alkyl) by reaction with an acid ion exchanger (II) consisting of a nucleus-sulphonated, opt. cross-linked polystyrene, at =170 (140-170) esp. 160 degrees C. Process pref. takes place at reduced press., esp. 50-700 mm Hg i,e, 60-930 mbar, and dioxan formed is distilled off together with water or the monohydric alcohol released. (II) do not attack reactor material and cause no waste water problems. Dioxan prodn. rate is increased under reduced press.
