The device uses grooves with rectangular cross section and the radial pressure necessary for the reliable seal is provided by the clamping ring, which partly surrounds the spring ring. When this assembly is forced into the rectangular groove, the radial components of the clamping ring's deformation provide the sealing contact against the flanks of the groove. Typically a face plate member (13) may be joined to the end of a shaft workpiece (12). Clamping disc (15) is associated with recess (14) which has a rectangular cross section. The axial clamping force is transposed via the deformation of the spiral spring ring and sheathing component cross sections into radially acting components (17, 18).
