The recycled gas produced during the dry coke quenching operation which contains combustible components is burnt and passed through a waste heat boiler to generated steam. In case the thermal energy data of the steam in the waste heat boiler deviate from a preset constant level, the recycled gas passes through an after combustion zone where a mixture of air and fuel, natural or similar gas is added to it at 1000 to 1200 degrees C. This is a simple and inexpensive means of keeping constant the parameters of the steam produced in the waste heat boiler, independent of fluctuations in the coke dust content of the recycled gas. The risk of explosions is effectively eliminated.
