The plug (1) containing a recess (2) for fixing the operating element, shaft or handle is ready-machined and into the flow opening a solid rod (3) of the same diameter as the opening is inserted. The entire arrangement is now inserted into a length of pipe (4) of the same inside diameter as the external diameter of the plug. The shape of the plug and the protruding parts of the solid rod serve as a matrix for the subsequent non-cutting shaping operation, after the completion of which the solid rod is withdrawn from the plug. The lower part of the plug is usually of an elliptical or wedge shape to act as centering element for the plug.
