Method for increasing the strength of leather with simultaneous softening comprises treating the leather with a mixt of sulphated, long chain fatty alcohol-polyethylene-glycol of the formula: R-(-O-CH2-CH2-)nOSO2M and long-chain sulphated fatty alcohols of formula: ROSO2M (where R = straight or branch-chain hydrocarbon radical of 16 to 24C, n = 2-6, and M = a metal or ammonium cation). The action of the mixt. may take place both in pickle and also in tanning stages, or after these, ie. in any stage of the wet processing. The treatment increases the tensile strength, and further resistance to tearing of the leather, and gives a greater grain smoothness and evenness of colour.
