The polariser consists of a waveguiding electro-optical material in a glass-fibre capillary, whereby a double or other multiple helix is wound on the surface of the capillary in the form of parallel electrode strips. The distance between the electrode strips is pref. sufficiently large that when different potentials are applied to then only a radial component of the electrical field occurs in the electro-optical material. Pref. the pitch of the electrode helix is an odd multiple of a quarter wave. A second helix of opposite hand may also be wound on the capillary.
