The readily releasable suction head operates with valve action and to this end comprises a guide and seat for the valve, the actual valve member being mounted on the article which is to be fastened. When the object is set down on a smooth surface the valve is closed but on lifting up the object the air penetrates through the valve member and the underpressure subsides so that the object can be effortlessly removed. A sealing lip can be mounted at the air outlet whilst a conical or spherical sealing face can be mounted at the valve member.
