The cutting tool has a swarf angle which has been calculated according to a certain formula in which the cosine of the effective clearance angle is calculated from an angle D measured on a test piece which was loaded in tension until breaking point. The angle D is the angle measured at the point where the section of the test piece is reduced due to elongation. The cosine of the effective clearance angle is equal to the cosine of angle D multiplied by the ratio of the original length (li) of the test piece to the length of the test piece at breaking point (lf). The ratio of li to lf is measured on a part of the test piece near the point of breaking.
