A process and appts. are claimed for the removal of a fully-wound bobbin from a winding machine for replacement with an empty bobbin sleeve, and the winding of a reserve length of yarn on the sleeve, in which the reciprocating yarn guide moves to one side on starting the bobbin change action, to give the reserve yarn length to be coiled round the new sleeve. As the yarn is drawn in a line from the fully-wound bobbin it is cut and the free end is caught and held by a suction tube. When the would bobbin has been removed, and replaced by an empty sleeve, a second yarn guide ensures that the yarn is wound as a reserve on the rotating sleeve, surplus yarn being cut off and the waste being sucked clear. The system ensures that the yarn is correctly positioned during a bobbin change, that the yarn wastage is reduced, and shorter movements in manipulating the yarn allow higher bobbin change speeds and faster timings.
