Filter beds are produced from natural peat fibres cleaned in individual suspension and mixed with othe rorg. or inorg. fibres into a mat. This mat is then sprayed or impregnated on its surface with a hardening soln. to provide stability. The additional org. or inorg. fibres mixed with the natural peat are so arranged that they provide a supporting structure for the peat. This support can come from synthetic, vegetable, animal, mineral or metallic fibres or a mixt. of at least two of these fibre types. The beds can be formed into plateS, prisms, spheres, cylinders or cones. The mat can be formed into a hollow body or have openings formed into it. The bed is esp. used in water prepn. and purificn.
