Sewing machine for sewing a tape at a predetermined location on a sewing article is provided with a photo-electric cell trained onto a tip of a guide for the tape which when inserted into the guide and fed past a reflector co-operating with the cell causes an electric signal to be emitted to lower the needle such that the tape may be fed into abutment with the needle. Machine is used for sewing on pockets.
